11/14/2008 - Democrats and Republicans

Anyone who knows me and has talked politics with me knows I think we should shitcan the entire electoral college. Popular vote should be the gold standard for our elections - true democracy. Think about the election in 2000 where Gore won the popular vote. Don't get me started on that. Even in the 2008 election, the electoral college vote made it seem like Obama kicked McCain's ass. Check out this map of who won what state.

So, according to this map, Obama destroyed - hitting 270 early on in the election and just crushing McCain more and more for every state won after. But the popular vote only had Obama win by a margin of around six million votes. Nation-wide, that's a pretty tight race and certainly not a landslide. I got the figures over what percentage a state was won by for each candidate and I colored each state a percentage of blue and red to really show the map for what it is - shades of purple.

Doesn't look so divided now, does it? Check out the big blue states: Hawaii was won by a whopping 72% of the democratic vote. Most of New England and California command around 60% of the democratic vote. Republican strongholds are places like Utah, Wyoming, and Alaska which hold around 70% of the vote there. Texas and some of the midwest Republican states come in at around 60% red. Big battlegrounds like Florida, Indiana, and Ohio are right around 50% on the dot. Often with the winner taking a mere 51% over 49%. So you see, its all just shades of purple.
